How To Make The Most Of Your Internship

Join Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) or any social group!

Being in a new environment can be scary but there are so many resources that can help build a social circle at your workplace! The opportunity to join an Employee Resource Group (ERG) or any social group at your company can be a valuable way for you as an intern to interact with the company's community, network with peers, and get to know the company's culture.

But first, what is an ERG? Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led groups that foster a sense of belonging, community, well-being, and inclusivity in a workplace. ERGs are formed around a shared identity (race, religion, gender, sexual orientation), interests, or hobbies.

How to join an ERG or social group + tips:

  1. Ask your recruiter, manager, and or colleagues about ERGs or social groups at your workplace. They can then redirect you to a member where you’ll be able to learn more about the group and how you can get involved.
  2. When talking to a member, make sure you ask questions about their events and or programs. Most groups meet on a monthly basis and hold events throughout the year.
  3. Get involved! As an intern, getting involved with the groups' events and or meetings, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from peers, build a network, and make an impact. As a bonus, this is something that will not only help build a social network in the workplace but will also make you stand out as an intern by getting involved with different communities.
  4. Always remember that you bring a unique perspective as an intern so, don’t shy away from asking questions, sharing your ideas, and getting involved in meetings or events.
